Offering classic career and casual clothing for plus-size women at moderate prices; Catherines Stores Corporation has more than 400 stores in 44 states. The business fills a much-needed niche by recognizing the fashion needs of women who wear sizes 16W to 26W and 28W to 34W; a size range not readily offered. Petite lengths in sizes 16WP to 26WP are also available in over half of the stores. The business originated in Memphis; in 1960; with a single store owned by Catherine Weaver; whose goal was to bring style to the plus-size market. As the concept became successful; more stores opened throughout the South. In 1960; a group of investors bought the chain; then called Catherines Stout Shoppes; and formed Catherines Inc. Growth continued; and by 1980 the company had opened its hundredth store. Catherines Inc. went public in 1991; becoming Catherines Stores Corporation. In January 2000; Charming Shoppes; Inc. acquired Catherines Stores Corporation.
