Proof positive that two heads are better than one; Chaparral's management team of Buck Pegg and Jim Lane have led the company to a long pattern of growth and expansion. When William 'Buck' Pegg launched Chaparral Baots in 1965; building a single 15-foot tri-hull with a sticker price of $675; he thought he was fulfilling a dream. As it turned out; the dream just kept getting bigger; to the point where Chaparral has gone on to become one of the largest and most respected independant boat builders in the world. Pegg's love affair with boating started while he was grwoing up in South Florida. After a short stint in college Pegg went to work with his father at Fiberglass Fabricators; manufacturing custom fiberglass parts.when a nearby boatbuilder came to look into the possbility of subcontracting some work; Pegg agreed.Less than a year later; Pegg felt the time was right to test the waters for himself; and Chaparral Boats was born. Well-designed and definately affordable; the first Chaparrals quickly found their way onto the waters in and around Florida; and it wasn't long before the company was looking for production facilities that had the room to let Chaparral continue to grow.Originally; Chaparral planned to simply expand its Ft. Lauderdale; Florida; plant; but when a boat manufacturing facility in Nashville; Georgia; became available; the plans changed; and Chaparral moved to Georgia. At the same time; Jim Lane joined Chaparral to oversee the business side of the company.Pegg; the founder; realized his talents were in boat design and manufacturing; and that Lane had the needed business savvy to help drive the company to greater heights. It was a good call.Under Lane's direction; Chaparral was among the first boat companies to use computer-controlled inventory tracking; among other innovative practices.during his tenure at Chaparral; Lane has served as president of the American Boatbuilders Association; and today he sits as Chairman of the Finance Committee for the National marine Manufacturers Association. Under Pegg and Lane; Chaparral has steadfastly held to its independance; even during the era of conglomerate takeovers and mergers in the late 1980's and early '90s.Independance; in Chaparral's eyes; gives the company an edge in key areas such as customer relations; diversity of engine offerings; and staying on the cutting edge of trends and innovations. In addition; the company has held to its longstanding commitment to research and development on the design front; developing new styles that have often anticipated consumer tastes. Throughout the 20th Century and now into the 21st; Chaparral has continued to grow. The original 37;000-square-foot production facility has grow to cover well over 1 million square feet.the dealer network now includes dealers from around the globe.Chaparral now employs well over 1000 people. From that single 15-foot tri-hull in 1965; the Chaparral fleet now features many different model offerings from 35'+ Cruisers all the way down to 18' ski and runabout boats.
