It began with a dream. The Mary Virginia Terry Cancer Center was one of the crown jewels of the Building a Healthier Community Campaign; a $20 million capital fund-raising effort made possible through community; physician and associate donations. On Oct. 11; 2004; St. Vincent's Health System broke ground on the Cancer Center project at Barrs Street and Riverside Avenue. The entire project encompassed an expansion of the DePaul Garage; a new center for the consolidation of St. Vincent's cancer services; and the Walk of Hope - an attractive walkway that connects Radiation Oncology to the DePaul Medical Office Building and houses care giving and educational resources. During the winter; builders installed the center's new linear accelerator; a treatment unit that delivers image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). To prepare the radiation unit; massive 3-feet thick concrete walls had to be built into the center. There is also a brachytherapy room that had to be lined with 2-inch-thick lead brick. Beverly Cusano; St. Vincent's Director of Radiation Oncology; looks forward to the center's new technology. Among several new additions is a dedicated Philips 16-slice Big Bore CT Scanner; which can easily accommodate any patient in any position; Cusano says.
