Thor Industries; Inc. was founded in 1980. It was then that Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein decided to buy Airstream; the most reputed name of the RV and bus industry. In spite of a strong brand name and recognized product quality; Airstream was going through an economic downfall as a result of financial instability of the late 1970s. The new management proposed in improvement of the product quality with reduced costs as a solution for the company crisis. In a few years; Thompson and Orthwein succeeded to turn Airstream back into a profitable company. In 1982; the profits Airstream made allowed the company to expand by acquiring General Coach; a Canadian company that produced travel trailers and fifth wheels. The manufacturing facilities of General Coach were located in Okanagan; British Columbia; and Hensall; Ontario. The following years; Thor Industries became public and later in 1986 publicly traded at the New York Stock Exchange. The company had evolved to one of the top first small companies in the US. During the late 1980s; Thor made its debut in the small and mid-size bus industry and the acquisitions continued the years that followed with companies owned by ElDorado National. Later on; National Coach; Dutchmen Manufacturing; Four Winds International; Champion Bus and other companies joined the Thor Industries family of companies. In 2001; Thor Industries united with Keystone RV and gained an important position on the RV manufacturing industry. The development continued with Damon; Crossroads RV and Breckenridge manufacturers of recreation vehicles; park trailers and motor homes. Presently; Thor is the largest RV and mid-size manufacturer. Thor Industries outstanding developments are a result of innovative management and employee dedication as well as the close connection with the suppliers.
